VISION, MISSION & ETHOS

"Haberdashers' Academies: Two Schools, One Vision"

This is an exciting and unique proposal to bring two schools together as Academies who share the same ethos and values. The vision is one where all students are inspired to reach their full potential, no matter their ability or background; where aspirations and achievements are constantly raised; where the improvements of standards reflect the needs of the local and wider communities; through the highest quality academic, personal and vocational teaching and guidance. We will build on the strengths and experiences of Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College and Knights Academy (formerly Malory school), so that our students become independent learners, fully equipped for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of adult life in the 21st century and well prepared to be the leaders, professionals and parents of tomorrow.

The Federation has brought the two schools together in a new and ambitious way. They are united by a single Governing body and Chief Executive, but are still separate schools with a Principal and Senior Management Team. At the same time, links have developed at every level and in every area of school life. Excellent opportunities for sharing resources, learning from each other and student and teacher exchange are in evidence. There is a distinct Mission: "to value tradition as well as progress and promote excellence". The Federation is at the cutting edge of national educational initiatives, committed to research and development and to adopting creative solutions that will benefit all Askean students.

The new Academies are firmly rooted in their local communities, providing Master classes for primary schools, evening classes for adults and training and conference facilities for local business. In this way, each Academy has a distinct local character reflecting the area they serve. Visits and visitors are part of everyday life, enhancing the experiences of the students and playing a full part in the regeneration of the local community.

The Haberdashers' Livery Company brings to the Federation experience and expertise in education going back 300 years. Their reputation goes before them and their inspiration and expectation of the very best will be felt throughout. For this reason, respect, responsibility and pride shine through all Haberdasher schools.

Both Academies are 11-18 schools with a shared Sixth Form. The Sixth Form will develop the existing Aske's provision rated "excellent" by OFSTED in March 2003 into a combined Post-16 learning community across both sites. It will provide new and traditional pathways in both Academies and vocational courses. The Sixth Form of 600 will be the student leadership for the Academies and will be firmly rooted in them. The Academies will work collaboratively with the 14-19 Area-wide strategy group and looks forward to participating in the 14-19 Pathfinder project.

There are opportunities for leadership training through House Prefect Systems developing these essential skills for all students. Houses are linked across the Federation by colour and pairing together for sporting, musical and drama events bringing students together from the two schools showing a common team ethos. In keeping with the tradition and ethos, there is the same strict uniform for years 7-11 at both Academies, comprising tie and blazer with the Haberdashers' crest.

There is a shared curriculum, learning ethos and pedagogy underpinning both Academies which enables exciting and innovative work to flourish to the benefit of every Haberdasher student. The specialism in each is different. Music at Aske's and Sport at Knights. These are developing excellence and provide for the highest standards of achievement for students showing aptitude in the specialist area but they will also provide the impetus for excellence across the whole curriculum as now at Aske's. ICT provision is cutting edge, enhancing the curriculum, teaching and learning Federation wide.

Classes are largely single sex 11-16 within a co-educational campus while the Sixth Form is fully co-educational. This is in line with Haberdasher tradition, our experience at raising standards in single sex groups and educational research that emphasises the importance of focusing on the particular and different learning styles of both boys and girls. All students will of course be together in all other aspects of Academy life: plays, trips, concerts, enrichment activities.

Admission at age 11 is a single process, administered by the Federation and the responsibility of the Governing Body as the Academies' Admissions Authority. The intake is comprehensive for each Academy with 10% being selected on aptitude for the specialism. Fair banding is used as specified in the Admissions Code of Practice. Each Academy has its own distinct and separate catchment areas with an inner and outer ring to ensure local community representation and social and ethnic diversity.

Overall, the Federation is a delivering a tremendous opportunity for the youngsters of South London and a chance for us, as a team, to really make an impact and a difference to their life chances.
